A new not-for-profit initiative is making acupuncture and complementary therapies more accessible and affordable in Nottingham.
Bolsover Wellness CIC (Community Interest Company), co-founded by acupuncture alumni Hannah Necsulescu and Sally Kennedy, is dedicated to ensuring that Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) reaches a wider audience.
Sherwood Community Acupuncture, operating out of Sherwood Methodist Church, launched in February 2025 and provides treatments on a multibed model — an approach widely used in China and other Eastern societies.
By treating multiple patients simultaneously, the clinic is able to reduce costs and offer services on a sliding scale of £25 to £45, allowing individuals to pay what they can afford.
Hannah and Sally, both qualified with a BSc (Hons) in Acupuncture from Lincoln College University Centre and validated by the Open University in 2024, have extensive experience from their time at Lincoln College’s Complementary Medicine Clinic. Their passion for accessible healthcare led them to establish Bolsover Wellness CIC and this community-focused clinic.
Sally said: "Although acupuncture is recognised in NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) guidelines for treating chronic pain and is available in some NHS settings, it is not universally provided.
"Bolsover Wellness CIC aims to fill this gap, ensuring more people can benefit from acupuncture’s therapeutic effects."
Both practitioners are members of the Association of Community and Multibed Acupuncture Clinics (ACMAC) and are fully licensed and insured.
Since its launch in February 2025, Sherwood Community Acupuncture has received a positive response, and plans are underway to expand the service to other areas.
Michelle Jaafar, Clinic Technician at Lincoln College Complementary Medicine Clinic, said: "This is an amazing achievement which highlights the hard work and expertise that both Sally and Hannah have consistently demonstrated in the field of acupuncture.
"Everyone at the clinic wishes them lots of success with this venture."
